Extraction Aftercare is important for wound healing.
Keep the gauze swab in place with pressure for approximately 15 minutes after leaving the surgery.
Normal Extraction: take 2x Panadol tablets immediately after removal of the gauze then then 3 hours later take 2 tablets of Nurofen (200 mg Ibuprofen). Take 2 tablets each type alternately every 3 hours, to maximum of 8 tablets each type every 24 hours for 2 days, to a maximum of 5 days.
Surgical or Multiple Extraction: Take 2 tablets of Panadeine Forte immediately after surgery, then 3 hours later take 2 tablets of Nurofen (200 mg Ibuprofen). Take 2 tablets each type alternately every 3 hours, to maximum of 8 tablets each type every 24 hours for 2 days, to a maximum of 5 days.
– Avoid smoking for at least 48 hours after surgery, as smoking impairs the healing process.
Wait until the anaesthetic has worn off before you eat, and/or drink anything hot.
– Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours as this may increase the bleeding.
– No heavy exercise for 24-48 hours to avoid bleeding after the extraction.
Do not rinse your mouth or spit with excessive force in the first 24 hours after the surgery as this may loosen the blood clot and -may slow down the healing process. Be gentle with brushing teeth next to extraction socket.
– To help the gums heal quickly, rest at home for the first 24 hours.
– Try to drink plenty of fluids.
– Nothing too hard or too hot to eat for the first 24 hours.
– Rinse your mouth using Savacol mouthwash (from chemist or supermarket) or warm salty water to help the healing process from the day after extraction, for 5 days.
– Take care not to bite or chew your lip or cheek while they are numbing.
– After two days of extraction of lower teeth only, do use the syringe provided to flush out extraction socket after eating to keep socket clean, do this for the next one week.
